Eating habits
High consumption of meat can be linked to a high rate of heart disease. The pork consumption in the Philippines was around 1.53 million tons per person in 2022. Filipinos favor eating meat, and the reasonably common choice was pork. However, plant-based food consumption started gaining popularity among Filipinos. In fact, in 2021, a survey revealed that over 60 percent of both male and female respondents stated that they consumed plant-based products.
Common diseases in the Philippines
Aside from heart and cerebrovascular diseases, the Filipino population is also exposed to infections, diabetes, skin diseases, and illnesses resulting from high meat consumption. In 2020, over 700 thousand Filipinos contracted acute respiratory tract infections, followed by over 400 thousand diagnosed with hypertension. In areas with high exposure to rain, dengue infections and leptospirosis have also become prevalent.
